Was upgrading your light actually worth the money?
I ran a cheap blurple panel for about two years and talked myself into believing it was fine. Then i bit the bullet last spring and grabbed a decent quantum board setup, mid-range price, nothing crazy. The difference in bud density was pretty hard to ignore. But now i'm second-guessing whether that was the light or whether i just got better at growing in general around the same time.
So i'm curious what other people experienced when they made a lighting upgrade. Did you notice a clear before-and-after, or was it more gradual and hard to pin down? I keep hearing that light is the single biggest lever you can pull indoors, and my results sort of back that up, but i only have my own one-guy operation to go on.
Also wondering if anyone went the other direction and decided a cheaper light was actually good enough for what they were growing. No shame in that at all, i know plenty of people getting solid results without spending a fortune. Just trying to figure out if the price jump is really justified or if i'm just rationalizing my purchase like my wife thinks I am.

The density thing is real but honestly for me the bigger difference was smell. When i went from a blurple to a proper full-spectrum setup the terpene expression on the same genetics was noticeably more complex. Like the difference between a strain that smells "kind of fruity" versus one that actually hits you with something layered and specific when you crack the jar. Hard to quantify but impossible to ignore once you've experienced it.
My guess is for your situation it's probably both, the light AND you getting better. Those two things happened at the same time so you can't fully separate them, and that's just the honest answer. But don't let that talk you out of what you saw. Light quality genuinely does affect resin development and terpene production, and quantum boards run cooler which gives you more control over your environment, which compounds the gains.
Where i'd push back slightly on the "biggest lever" thing is that cure is criminally underrated in these conversations. I've seen people with great lights absolutely wreck a harvest in the jar. So the light got you there but it's not the whole picture.

The skill vs gear question is genuinely hard to untangle, but here's the thing, you could run the same genetics back to back under both lights and you'd still have more experience the second run. There's really no clean way to isolate it unless you're running a side by side.
What i will say is that in a small space like my 3x3, the thermal difference mattered more than i expected. My old blurple was running my tent hot enough that i was fighting the environment constantly, and once i swapped it out my VPD got way easier to manage. Some of the gains people attribute to "better light" are actually "better climate control because the light isn't a space heater anymore." that's a real thing that doesn't get talked about enough.
On the "cheap light is good enough" angle, i think it depends a lot on what you're optimizing for. If you're growing for personal use and you're happy with what you're pulling, that's a valid stopping point. Not everything needs to be chased.
