I just picked up the Hemper x RIPNDIP Enlightened Nermel Sherlock and the 11" Diamond Waterpipe (Blue). It's been probably at least 20 years since I purchased an actual Waterpipe (bong) and a hand pipe, so it was time to treat myself. New harvest and fresh new glass ;)
Anyone remember back in the 2000's when illadelph bongs were like $350.00 I always wanted one but could never convince myself $350.00 for waterpipe was wise purchase.

Lol wrong section man, this is Harvest & Curing, not the marketplace. Mods are gonna move this.
That said, fresh glass for a new harvest is a vibe. Nothing worse than smoking killer terps through a dirty caked up piece. The taste is completely different on clean glass, people underestimate that so much.
Illadelph nostalgia is real though. I remember those things being the status symbol of every serious smoker back then. Never pulled the trigger either.

clean glass mattering for terps is real, i'll give that. but if your cure is off it doesnt matter what you're smoking out of, dirty or spotless. fix the source first.

there was no "smoking section" per say to post it in the correct spot, so I figured harvest and curing was close enough lol.
My friend Sean and his brother Dylan took over their father's glass business when he passed away. Their father started the business in the 1980's and used to be at Grateful Dead shows all the time. They became the largest online head shop, I got my eye on this baby

That bowling pin recycler is a cool piece, Cheech Glass does some fun stuff design wise. The recycler function is what gets me though, those things genuinely do preserve terps better than a straight tube. The extra filtration without killing the flavor is a tough balance and recyclers nail it when they're made right.
That's a cool story about Sean and Dylan's family business, being around Dead show glass culture in the 80s is basically the origin story of American headshop culture. Real roots there.

They are straight up honest cool people. Some of the nicest folks I have met in travels.
Their warehouse is like a museum of water pipes and bongs, ceiling to floor wall to wall, vintage and new all for sale, and he gives me wholesale prices and throws free stuff in as well when I visit. Your bong breaks in transit, no questions asked, immediately replaced.
Him and Bear Quartz are the only two places I buy glass from. Brick and mortar head shop prices are hilarious, can't do it lol.

That warehouse sounds unreal. Ceiling to floor vintage glass is basically my dream room, some of those older pieces have character you just can't find in the mass produced stuff anymore.
And yeah brick and mortar prices are a joke at this point. Paying retail markup on glass when you can go direct to people who actually know what they're selling, no thanks. Having a connect like that with wholesale pricing is genuinely valuable, especially when you're particular about what you smoke out of.

Wrong subforum but whatever.
The Illadelph thing never made sense to me. I was rolling joints in a field in 1978 and the herb tasted fine. Glass is glass past a certain point. The guys I knew who dropped $350 on a bong in 2003 were mostly buying a conversation piece.
Clean glass does matter for flavor though, the other reply got that right. I'll say this much: a $40 piece you clean every week beats a $400 piece you clean twice a year.

The clean glass point is hard to argue with. I will say though, not all glass is created equal when it comes to heat distribution and diffusion, there is a noticeable difference between cheap pieces and something with actual craftsmanship behind it. But yeah, a dirty expensive piece is worse than a clean cheap one, no question.

100% and so much easier to clean Borosilicate glass than cheap glass, and it will "never" be permanently stained with hard water and heavy use like cheap glass does.

Fair point on the hard water staining, I've had cheap pieces go cloudy and stay that way no matter what you threw at them. Borosilicate does hold up better long term. Anyways, the cleaning frequency argument still stands regardless of material. Good glass just makes it easier to stay on top of it.

1978 that takes me back to brick weed from Mexico and the gas weed from Mexico. Smoking resin and water leaf during the summer because the town was "dry" and everybody had to wait until Fall harvest to get some stash because grow rooms didn't exist.
Do you remember the first "Bob Snodgrass" glass pipes that came out of Oregon in the late 80"s early 90's? Those were extremely difficult to find, and we you did find one they weren't cheap.

Snodgrass I remember. Eugene scene, fuming technique, the whole thing. A friend of mine came back from a Grateful Dead show in '91 with one and we passed it around like it was a religious artifact. Those pieces had actual craft behind them, which is more than I can say for most of what's on that Bear Quartz site.
That's the distinction I'd draw. Snodgrass was an artist doing something new. Most of the $300 bongs people are chasing now are just brand names on standard shapes.

Cheech Glass is fine for what it is. You're not buying craft, you're buying a name and a shape, and at least you know that going in. The bowling pin thing is a novelty but novelties are honest about what they are, which puts them ahead of the stuff pretending to be serious art.
The Tommy Chong bust was a whole thing. 2003, Operation Pipe Dreams. Federal resources well spent, obviously.
