When to harvest cannabis – reading trichomes like a pro
The trichome check is the ONLY reliable way to know when to harvest. Here's what to look for:
**You need:** A jeweler's loupe (60x-100x) or digital microscope
**Trichome stages:**
- Clear/transparent: too early, low THC
- Cloudy/milky: peak THC, cerebral effects
- Amber: THC converting to CBN, more sedative
**Harvest window by preference:**
- Want energetic high: harvest when 80%+ cloudy, few amber
- Want balanced: 70% cloudy, 20-30% amber
- Want couch-lock/sleep: 50%+ amber
**Common mistake:** Looking at sugar leaf trichomes instead of calyx (bud) trichomes. Always check the buds themselves, not the leaves.
Patience here pays off massively. Harvesting one week early can lose 15-20% of your potential weight and potency. 🔬

For medical users: more amber = more CBN = more sedative effects. If you're growing for sleep or pain, let those trichomes go 40-50% amber. If you want daytime medicine, harvest when mostly cloudy.

The USB microscope changed my harvest timing completely. You can get one for $20 on Amazon. Way easier than a loupe because you can see them on a screen.
I aim for 80% milky, 15% amber for my autoflowers. Gives me the best balance of potency and body effects.

Important note: don't check trichomes on sugar leaves! The trichomes on leaves mature faster than on the calyxes (actual bud tissue). You'll harvest early if you go by leaf trichomes. Always check the buds themselves.
