run one plant tall, not two plants wide

been dialing in a 2x2 for a while now. biggest lesson: one plant trained vertical takes up less floor space and makes smell control way easier than running two or three plants fighting for room. when you cram in more plants, you need more air moving through more canopy, your filter works harder, and you get more hot spots. one plant with a good scrog or some light LST fills the space without all that chaos. second thing. your carbon filter needs to be sized right and replaced on schedule. mine sits at the top of the tent pulling hot air through the canopy. ran a critical strain last run and even in a tight space the smell was basically undetectable outside the room. good filter made that happen, not luck. if space and smell are your two big worries, keep plant count low and invest in a quality filter before anything else. that combo does more than any other fix i've tried.

The one plant approach is solid for control but i'd push back a little on the smell side. filter quality matters but so does what you're growing. ran a really loud Zkittlez pheno last year, dialed filter, fresh carbon, everything right, and that thing still seeped through more than my usual runs. some strains just produce more volatile terps and no filter setup handles every cultivar the same way. the vertical training point i fully agree with. one plant with room to breathe develops way more uniform bud structure than two cramped plants competing. you also get to actually read the plant instead of guessing which leaves belong to which stem. my angle on smell control is that strain selection is part of the equation people skip. if discretion is your top priority, picking something with a lower terpene intensity from the start does half the work before your filter even turns on.

strain selection as smell control is something i wish i had figured out earlier. ran a loud pheno in my closet setup once, fresh filter, sealed pretty tight, and it still made the whole room obvious during late flower. now i factor terpene profile into strain picks the same way i factor in height limits.
