Bone dry August air will still rot your buds

People assume mold is a wet climate problem. Run outdoor long enough in any climate and you will find out otherwise. Dense colas trap morning dew and hold it all day, even in the desert Southwest. Learned that one the hard way with a Durban Toxic in 2019, lost the top third of four plants in a week. The fix I've used for years is aggressive lollipopping by late July. Strip everything below the canopy, give air a path through the plant. I also angle my stakes so the main colas don't sit perfectly vertical. A slight lean lets water shed instead of pool. Watch the dew point forecast, not just humidity. If overnight dew point climbs above 60F for several nights running, get out there in the early morning with a fan or even just shake the plants gently. Sounds ridiculous. Works every time. Nothing revolutionary here. Just stuff that keeps a harvest intact.

The dew point tip is underrated and more people should listen to it, but i'll push back a little on aggressive lollipopping as the main solution. Stripped too hard one year on a Purple Punch pheno I was running, and yeah the airflow was great, but I lost a ton of the lower sugar leaf coverage that was shading my developing trichomes from direct afternoon sun. Trade one problem for another. What worked better for me was being more selective. I'd remove crossing branches and anything truly buried in canopy, but leave some of that mid-tier foliage if it wasn't blocking airflow completely. Also started spacing my plants further than I thought I needed to in mid-summer, gave each cola its own lane basically. The lean trick is legit though. That's something I started doing after a greenhouse grower told me about it years ago and I never went back. Dense colas sitting perfectly vertical in morning dew are basically cups. Tilt them even slightly and the whole geometry changes. My bigger concern with late season outdoor is always what mold does to the terpene profile before you even see visible damage. By the time you spot it the terps in that section are already compromised. Caught some early botrytis on a gassy Chem cut two seasons ago and even the "clean" parts of the cola smelled flat at cure. That's the part that kills me more than the yield loss honestly.
