Dig your holes in March, not June

Been saying this for years and people still wait until the week before they plant to scratch out a hole and call it a day. Dig your outdoor holes in late winter or early March. Let the soil breathe, let the frost finish breaking it up, let the worms move in. Six weeks of sitting open does more for your soil structure than any amendment you can buy. I go 24 inches wide and 18 deep minimum. Fill it back with a mix of native soil, aged manure, and some perlite for drainage. Tamp it loose, not packed. Then walk away from it. By the time you're transplanting in late May or June, the hole has basically composted itself into something alive. Roots hit that and take off like you wouldn't believe. I've grown the same plot behind my barn for going on thirty years using this same prep. Small effort in winter, big difference in August. That's really the whole tip.
